In the fifteenth century (AH), mankind was witnessing the greatest scientific development , effort on behalf of scientists.It was also the time of the greatest exchange of information and interaction between cultures . Scientific achievements and the concepts of human knowledge have vast influence everywhere , which causes many changes in the relationship between man and the universe. The increasing growth of technology in the field of communication is a very tangible example , which contributes to the influence of cultures upon each other - now , more than ever .

Understanding religion , human sciences , social sciences , art , public opinion,a nation’s political expectations and so forth are all causes of important changes in humanity.In such a world,the learned people of every nation play a key role in guiding the society in the right direction [in accordance to the time].

The library in general and more specifically-a vast container of books - is a place that provides the best means for answering today’s questions . It is also a place for achieving cultural conceptions of the new world and knowing the various ideas of thinkers.The library is a treasure of human knowledge, the basis of civilization,and the center for distribution ideas.The culture of every nation is the outcome of its heritage , which is kept in written or compiled form within the libraries,for the use of all people.

Every thoughtful man is eager to know about his national heritage and his ancestors’ civilization. The answer to his eagerness can be found in libraries. As a matter of fact, libraries do their best in developing sciences, trying to capture the great and endless knowledge of human beings.

As proven by history, the most stable base for preserving spiritual treasures and assets of a society is the library . A library is one of the most effective elements in preserving evidence of ancient civilization , cultural heritage, scientific theories of the past , and various ideas of the present society.

Gathering , taking care of , and making books available is the greatest favor to thinkers and researchers . Books play an important role in shaping people’s ideas and their way of thinking . For this reason , developing libraries to spread knowledge has always been a conscious notion among great personalities of Islam. The Shi`a creed has a great share in such an honorable task (developing libraries), which is not seen in any other Islamic sect.

True cultural services, dissemination of moral principles, spreading the Islamic ideology, compiling books, establishing schools, libraries, and other tasks that have been done by outstanding personalities of the Shi`a creed are countless. According to Shaykh Al-Mufid (may God’s mercy be upon him) , in the interval between the first and eleventh Imam there have been 400 volumes of books written by Shi`ite scholars , which are called “the Four-hundred Basic Books”. All these efforts and services helped bringing about such a rich and extended culture. The efforts of genius people , who have ascended like stars in the past centuries, to enlighten human thoughts and ideas to the point of perfection, have paved the way for the development of the Shi`a world.
